The surfactants under your sink were invented between 1949 and 1968. The chemistry of how household cleaners actually work — petroleum-derived molecules that grab dirt so water can carry it away — hasn't been re-engineered since the Eisenhower administration. The big cleaning companies didn't reinvent. They scaled.
Cleaning is a commodity business. The patent-expired molecule works, ships cheap, and keeps the category profitable. Reinventing required a complete starting-material change — different inputs, different process, different supply chain. No incumbent had a reason to take that risk.
Then consumers asked for safer cleaners. The industry's answer was branding, not chemistry. "Plant-based," "natural," "green," "non-toxic" — none of these words have a federal definition for cleaning products. The actual surfactants in a "plant-based" cleaner are functionally identical to their petrochemical counterparts at the end of synthesis. The leaf on the bottle changes nothing about the molecule. The chemists running these companies couldn't — or wouldn't — start from scratch. So they painted the bottle green and called it innovation.
We didn't reformulate. We changed the starting material. Fermentation produces our active ingredients the same way it produces yogurt, beer, sourdough, and the B12 in your multivitamin — but applied to cleaning chemistry for the first time. That's what makes it the first chemistry advancement in cleaning since the 1950s.
